Coonoor is a
popular hill station, located at an altitude of 2000 feet in
the Nilgiri Hills. The pretty little town is as a distance of
17 kms from Ooty, making it an ideal place to visit, while one
is taking a tour of Ooty.
Ooty became a popular hill station, primarily because of the
attention it received in the hands of British officers, which
led to a major rise in tourism in the hill station. Coonoor on
the other hand is a quite little town, which does not lack in
natural beauty yet doesn't have too much of high traffic of
visitors that can at times have a dire effect on the flora and
fauna of the area. Visitors come to this town to spend a few
days surrounded by greenery and to get a break from the hustle
and bustle of a city.
Some of the important tourists attractions in Coonoor are, the
Sim's Park, Lamb's rock, Dolphin's nose and Kotagiri. The
Sim's Park extends over an area of 12 hectares. The park has
over 1000 variety of plants, which include flowering plants,
pines, shrubs, etc. The Lamb's rock is a popular picnic spot.
It is about 9 kms from Coonoor and is a great place to click
those holiday snaps. This a great vantage point, which offers
a spectacular view of the plains of Coimbatore and the
tea-estates. Another picnic spot is the Dolphin's nose, which
is also a vantage point. From here one can enjoy a panoramic
view of the surrounding areas and even the Catherine falls on
clear days.
One can also take a tour to Kotagiri, which though is not as
popular as Ooty and Coonoor, nevertheless boasts of being the
oldest hill station in the Nilgiris. The hill station has many
tea estates, and if one is visiting Ooty and Coonoor, then the
whole tour cannot be called complete without a tour to this
quaint little town.
Some other places that can be visited in Coonoor are Ralliah
dam, Pomological station and Lady Canning's seat. While on a
tour to Ooty, with Ooty India, The visitors to the Nilgiris
must take a tour of Coonoor, to really have the holiday
experience they seek, that will refresh them and rejuvenate
their spirits.
